Feeling overwhelmed?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_252\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lindacollison.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/230px-Stendhal1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-252\" class=\"lazyload size-full wp-image-252\" title=\"230px-Stendhal\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27230%27%20height%3D%27297%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20230%20297%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27230%27%20height%3D%27297%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-orig-src=\"http:\/\/www.lindacollison.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/230px-Stendhal1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"230\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-252\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">19th century novelist Stendhal<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Are there too many books in the world?\u00a0 No!\u00a0 Are there too many books for one person to read in a lifetime?\u00a0 Absolutely!\u00a0 The dilemma feels similar to <strong>Stendahl\u2019s Syndrome<\/strong>, a temporary\u00a0response of being\u00a0 physically and emotionally\u00a0debilitated while \u00a0in the presence of great works of art.<\/p>\n<p>According to Wikipedia, &#8220;<em>the illness is named after the famous 19th-century French author <a title=\"Stendhal\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stendhal\">Stendhal<\/a> (pseudonym of Henri-Marie Beyle), who described his experience with the phenomenon during his 1817 visit to <a title=\"Florence\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Florence\">Florence<\/a> in his book Naples and Florence: A Journey from Milan to Reggio.\u00a0 Although there are many descriptions of people becoming dizzy and fainting while taking in Florentine art, especially at the <a title=\"Uffizi\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Uffizi\">Uffizi<\/a>, dating from the early 19th century on, the syndrome was only named in 1979, when it was described by Italian psychiatrist <a title=\"Graziella Magherini\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Graziella_Magherini\">Graziella Magherini<\/a>, who observed and described more than 100 similar cases among tourists and visitors in Florence.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Just thinking about all the books I will never be able to read no matter how long I live makes me feel light-headed and rather sick.\u00a0 So what to do?<\/p>\n<p>Free sample chapters in electronic format offer a slight remedy, at least for me.\u00a0\u00a0 I have quite a collection on my Kindle of first chapters of books by various authors, which gives me an idea of the writer\u2019s voice and style, as well as the subject matter.\u00a0 Sometimes I am compelled to buy the book, sometimes I am not, but my book awareness has greatly expanded.\u00a0 I know a little about a lot more authors, I am able to better keep up with new books as well as classics, not to mention the ever expanding sea of mid-list titles.<\/p>\n<p>Even with free sample downloads\u00a0 I still buy tons of books.\u00a0 I buy hardbacks, paperbacks &#8212;\u00a0new and used &#8212; I buy many e-books because my Kindle is great for travel.\u00a0 I always buy books by my favorite authors, I like reading their entire <em>oeuvre<\/em> and as a writer myself, I like following how my favorite authors develop over the years.\u00a0 I read a lot of nonfiction:\u00a0 History and biography are great favorites, and I love a good literary novel.\u00a0 My favorite authors, living and dead, are those who have insight into the psychology of their characters and who are able to bring alive the setting.\u00a0 Character-driven fiction, whether historical or urban contemporary, is what I most enjoy.\u00a0 Frankly, I don\u2019t care so much<em> what happens<\/em> in a novel;
