2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As National Novel Writing Month (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nanowrimo.org\/\">NaNoWriMo<\/a>) begins its final week, the home stretch, I&#8217;m working to finish the revisions on a novel I&#8217;ve had in the works for several years. \u00a0I can&#8217;t say too much about it, or else I will lose the drive, the muse, the mojo, the magic. \u00a0But let me tell you that it takes place at sea and there is a story within the story. \u00a0 Some of the books I&#8217;ve read for background include <a He; China and the Oceans in the Early Ming Dynasty<\/a>, \u00a0<a Walker<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>My fascination with junks began some years ago, when I saw the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chinaseas.org\/csvsjunks1\/index11.html\"><em> Intrepid Dragon<\/em> <\/a>at the Ala Wai Boat Harbor in Hawaii. \u00a0She reeked of ghosts. \u00a0I contacted one of the crew members and was invited on board. \u00a0It was a real &#8220;project&#8221;, in various stages of disrepair, but she was floating. \u00a0Which is pretty important, for a boat. \u00a0In fact, it&#8217;s the main requirement.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1364\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lindacollison.com\/nanowrimo-2012\/iphone-since-aug-14-2012-161\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1364\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1364\" id=\"caption-attachment-1364\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Intrepid Dragon<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A few years later I saw the visiting\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Princess_Taiping_(sailing_vessel)\"><em>Princess Taiping<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0<\/a>a traditional Chinese junk on a Pacific crossing. \u00a0She was tied up at the Ala Wai fuel dock (aka, the Poor Boyz Yacht Club). \u00a0I took quite a few photos, I was so taken with this vessel (and if I can ever find them, I&#8217;ll post one or two.) \u00a0 Tragically, in 2009, \u00a0<em>Princess Taiping<\/em> was<a href=\"http:\/\/yachtpals.com\/princess-taiping-4150\"> hit by a freighter<\/a> and destroyed, not long after we saw her. \u00a0(Thankfully all of the people were rescued.)<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve spent the past five years reading about junks and about Zheng He and the Ming Dynasty. \u00a0Meanwhile, I&#8217;ve been writing the story, which partly takes place in the present, and partly in the past. \u00a0 Now, I&#8217;d better get back to that revision if I want to be finished by the end of November. \u00a0Working title? \u00a0<em>Good
