Lynn\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lindacollison.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/John-A.-Lynn-150x150.png\" data-orig-src=\"http:\/\/www.lindacollison.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/John-A.-Lynn-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27150%27%20height%3D%27150%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20150%20150%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27150%27%20height%3D%27150%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/madhatdesign.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/John-A.-Lynn-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/madhatdesign.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/John-A.-Lynn.png 180w\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-orig-sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>I get by with a little help from my friends.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alaricbond.com\/\">Alaric Bond <\/a>who sent me a list of sources (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lindacollison.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Annotated-Bibliography.pdf\">Annotated Bibliography <\/a>)\u00a0from a colleague\u00a0in the National Maritime Society &#8212;\u00a0a student of history\u00a0who is writing an undergraduate dissertation on women in the navy during the 18th-19th centuries.\u00a0That is\u00a0right up my jibboom, and I am\u00a0glad to learn that\u00a0others are interested in this topic as well.\u00a0 Some of the\u00a0books listed are ones I used to research <em>Star-Crossed<\/em> (now rewritten and titled<em> Barbados Bound<\/em>) and <em>Surgeon&#8217;s Mate; book two of the Patricia MacPherson Nautical Adventure Series<\/em>, and which I mentioned in my previous blog.\u00a0 A few others I\u00a0became aware of, thanks to historians<a href=\"http:\/\/www.adkinshistory.com\/royadkins.aspx\">\u00a0Roy and Lesley Adkins\u00a0<\/a>, authors of <em>Jack Tar<\/em>, <em>The War for All the Oceans<\/em>, and many other nonfiction books.<\/p>\n<p>One source new to me was\u00a0 <em>Women, Armies, and Warfare in Early Modern Europe<\/em> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.history.northwestern.edu\/people\/lynn.html\">John A. Lynn II,<\/a> published in 2008 by Cambridge University Press.\u00a0 I\u00a0quickly found a\u00a0used copy online and am now enjoying this academic look at women who accompanied their men to war.\u00a0 The author earned his Ph.D. from the University of California and is the author of numerous academic studies about warfare, particularly historical\u00a0French warfare\u00a0.\u00a0\u00a0Dr. Lynn has served as president of the U.S. Commission on Military History and as VP of the Society for Military History.<\/p>\n<p>In this book\u00a0Lynn examines the roles of women who campaigned with armies in Europe from 1500 to 1815.\u00a0 He includes notable female individuals who assumed male identities but far more numerous and perhaps essential were the women who, as women, marched in the train of armies.\u00a0 The &#8220;camp followers&#8221; as we call them.\u00a0 While some worked as prostitutes they also performed a variety of tasks including laundering, sewing, cooking, nursing, etc.\u00a0\u00a0&#8220;Early modern armies were always accompanied by women and regarded them as essential to the well-being of the troops.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0Before 1650 women also participated in the &#8220;pillage economy&#8221; of armies.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a fascinating book and I&#8217;m glad to see an academic of Dr. Lynn&#8217;s\u00a0reputation\u00a0who has\u00a0approached the topic seriously.<\/p>\n<p>A few books that Roy Adkins turned me onto\u00a0are <em>Naval Wives\u00a0&amp; Mistresses<\/em> by Margarette Lincoln, <em>The Hidden Navy<\/em>, by Evelyn Berckman, and <em>Tracing\u00a0Your Naval Ancestors; a guide for family historians<\/em> by Simon Fowler.\u00a0\u00a0 Roy is very generous with his knowledge and he sent me a pdf copy of an article he and Lesley wrote for the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Family History Monthly November, 2009 (copyright).\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lindacollison.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Warship-Women-Article.pdf\">Warship Women Article<\/a>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m currently working on <em>By a Yankee Moon<\/em>, book three of the series, which will hopefully be\u00a0\u00a0published by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fireshippress.com\/\">Fireship Press <\/a>\u00a0early next year &#8212; if I don&#8217;t get too side-tracked by the background reading!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I get by with a little help from my friends.
