{"id":1206,"date":"2012-06-29T15:32:00","date_gmt":"2012-06-29T22:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lindacollison.com\/blog\/?p=1206"},"modified":"2012-06-29T15:36:26","modified_gmt":"2012-06-29T22:36:26","slug":"top-5-titles-informed-inspired-nautical-fiction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madhatdesign.com\/newsite\/top-5-titles-informed-inspired-nautical-fiction\/","title":{"rendered":"Top 5 Titles that informed and inspired my nautical fiction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">Acclaimed author and webmaster <a href=\"http:\/\/msnyder.typepad.com\/about\/\">Midori Snyder <\/a>is putting together a great list of sources used by the authors of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fireshippress.com\/\">Fireship Press<\/a>.\u00a0 Over the years I have collected a boat load of books\u00a0 relating to 18th century sailing ships, medicine, social history, etc. &#8212; and I&#8217;m still acquiring, reading, and re-reading.\u00a0 It&#8217;s nearly impossible to pick my favorites, but these are the five that I must say have meant the most to me.\u00a0 In the order in which I discovered them&#8230;\u00a0 Thanks, Midori, for prompting me.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Collison\u2019s Top Five Sources used in researching <em>The Patricia MacPherson Nautical Adventure Series<\/em> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0The Wooden World; an anatomy of the Georgian Navy<\/em><\/strong> by N.A.M. Rodgers<\/p>\n<p><em>The Wooden World <\/em>was my introduction to life aboard a British warship in the mid-18<sup>th<\/sup> century. It was one of the first books I purchased after sailing aboard the Bark <em>Endeavour<\/em> replica.\u00a0 When I disembarked in Kona I knew I was going to write an historical novel set aboard a ship in the mid-18<sup>th<\/sup> century, but I still had years of research ahead of me.\u00a0 <em>The Wooden World<\/em> is both reliable and readable.\u00a0 I still consult it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lindacollison.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/books2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-full wp-image-1209\" title=\"books2\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27128%27%20height%3D%27194%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20128%20194%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27128%27%20height%3D%27194%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-orig-src=\"http:\/\/www.lindacollison.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/books2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"128\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a>Female Tars; Women Aboard Ship in the Age of Sail <\/em><\/strong>by Suzanne Stark<\/p>\n<p>Suzanne Stark\u2019s <em>Female Tars<\/em> opened my eyes and my imagination to the reality of women aboard British warships.\u00a0 Most were not dressed as men but were the wives of the warrant officers and the prostitutes who visited the ships when in port.\u00a0 She also discusses women who portrayed themselves as men in order to work and live aboard.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lindacollison.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/512puSZOcAL__SL160_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-dpTopRight12-18_SH30_OU01_AA160_.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-full wp-image-1210\" title=\"512puSZOcAL__SL160_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-dp,TopRight,12,-18_SH30_OU01_AA160_\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lindacollison.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/512puSZOcAL__SL160_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-dpTopRight12-18_SH30_OU01_AA160_.jpg\" data-orig-src=\"http:\/\/www.lindacollison.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/512puSZOcAL__SL160_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-dpTopRight12-18_SH30_OU01_AA160_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27160%27%20height%3D%27160%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20160%20160%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27160%27%20height%3D%27160%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/madhatdesign.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/512puSZOcAL__SL160_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-dpTopRight12-18_SH30_OU01_AA160_-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/madhatdesign.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/512puSZOcAL__SL160_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-dpTopRight12-18_SH30_OU01_AA160_.jpg 160w\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-orig-sizes=\"(max-width: 160px) 100vw, 160px\" \/><\/a>Hen Frigates<\/em><\/strong> by Joan Druett<\/p>\n<p>Although Druett\u2019s book deals mostly about women aboard ships in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century, I found it greatly enriched my overall knowledge of what it was like to live afloat during the age of sail \u2013 from a woman\u2019s perspective.\u00a0 Druett has also written other marvelous maritime history books, such as <em>Rough Medicine; Surgeons at Sea in the Age of Sail<\/em>, and <em>Tupaia; Captain Cook\u2019s Polynesian Navigator.\u00a0 <\/em>I own all three of these books and recommend them highly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lindacollison.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/books4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload alignleft size-full wp-image-1211\" title=\"books4\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27128%27%20height%3D%27201%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20128%20201%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27128%27%20height%3D%27201%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-orig-src=\"http:\/\/www.lindacollison.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/books4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"128\" height=\"201\" \/><\/a>Jack Tar; Life in Nelson\u2019s Navy<\/em><\/strong> by Roy and Leslie Adkins.<\/p>\n<p>The Adkins are terrific historians and <em>Jack Tar<\/em> is a wonderful resource for both writers and readers of historical nautical fiction.\u00a0 The authors are very approachable; Roy actually emails me with updates to his newsletter and encouragement on my writing.\u00a0 Roy and Leslie incorporate so many first-hand accounts of officers and seamen \u2013 well-chosen bits of letters, logs, and diaries &#8211; all of which bring the ship to life without the authors ever having to add imagined detail or other intrusions.
